Amethyst Geode Cathedral from Uruguay

Beautiful cut-base amethyst geode clusters (cathedrals) from Uruguay. All of these cathedrals contain the highest saturation of color and polished edges.

An amethyst geode is priced much like a colored gemstone, the tone and saturation of the amethyst crystals being the most important factor in determining its price. The crystals displaying the deepest purple tones with strong color saturation are considered superior geodes. The quality decreases as the amethyst crystals lose their saturation and become lighter purple.

The second factor used in grading is the symmetry, or outside, shape of the geode itself. The most symmetrical geode command the best prices.

The third factor used is it's weight vs. the dimension. In other words, the proportion of the geode crystal viewing area to its weight. Since geodes are priced by weight, after grading its color and symmetry, a geode with very thick sidewalls or an extra heavy base would be downgraded.

The final factor is its uniqueness. Unique features such as vugs (caves), growth of other minerals, such as calcite, or stalactites may raise the price of the geode. Other man-made features will also affect the price. Features such as cut base, or polished edges add appeal to the specimens and therefore, the price.

1385 g, 4.7 x 4.0 x 3.5 inches, excellent saturation, good symmetry, good weight, polished edges, cut-base
